Love

Love at First Swipe

What can I say?  It was love at first swipe…. To the right, that is.

It may sound cliché but it’s so true when they say: the right person will come along when you least expect it. In my case, that person came along while I was fully embracing being single and enjoying the energy that summer brings to the city. I will say that the universe could have waited until the Fall started. I ended up missing out on the beach that entire summer but it was worth it.

I met my now fiancé on a popular “dating” app that you might have heard of: Tinder.

I know you will probably roll your eyes since we each can remember our own Tinder stories. If you don’t, just imagine that one person at the bar that hits on every single person until they find someone who is interested. That sums up Tinder but with a lot more ghosting and crude language.

At the time of our meeting, I was on my millionth break from the app and dating in general. A good friend convinced me to give the app another try. I agreed and I told him I’d give it a solid week (because, to quote a internet icon, “ain’t nobody got time for that.”).

When I initially came across the profile of my now-fiancé everything in me told me to swipe right but I wasn’t ready. It wasn’t because of the terrible photos he had on his profile (I will note that I have taught him the art of the angles, and now he can smize with the best of them). I decided to close out the app without making a decision. In the years that I used Tinder in whatever capacity I never had this reaction. I knew something about this guy would change my life and I wasn’t ready to embrace whatever was about to happen.

After a random night out at a bar, I decided to swipe right around 2 am. I know that’s the universal booty call time but after swiping right I literally logged out of the app because I was already shook that I gathered the nerve to make that action.

Of course he messaged me later the next day and my life changed completely. I think the universe has a funny sense of humor but it has perfect timing.

    Hi Shay,
I came across your story on a post that was shared. I am also one of those who have found love online. I met my boyfriend of three years on plenty of fish. He’s the first man I’ve dated after leaving an abusive relationship. He’s loved me in more ways than I ever could’ve imagined. Thank you for sharing your story and congratulations to you both!
